It’s believed President Vladimir Putin, who has more or less retained office since 2000, has put forward an anti gay agenda to target the LGBT group to consolidate political power. The police are very much on the side of the government arresting gay right activists instead of the people who are discriminating and attacking the demonstrators. This means even talking about gay rights or displaying a rainbow flag could leave you arrested. Russia hates the gays! If you’re not familiar as of June 30th Russia has enacted an anti gay agenda which bans ‘propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations’, making it illegal to support gay rights in public.
New anti-gay laws in Russia are now being subjected to Athletes ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympic games despite reassurance that Athletes will not be targeted.
